"Working with local communities to help build a sustainable future for people and the environment"
Issue #2 - September 2009
Dear Friend,
Welcome to the September 2009 edition of The Oliver Foundation's newsletter.
The Oliver Foundation is committed to creating a meaningful and sustainable impact in under-resourced communities, primarily in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa, focusing on empowering disadvantaged and vulnerable people to create personal self-sustainability. The Foundation focuses on creating a catalyst of change within the local community through developing and supporting programmes which have a social, environmental, educational and economic impact on those lives it touches.
You can view a video on YouTube which will show you a little of the area in which we work.

New Vegetable Tunnels

Entrepreneurship is always to be encouraged. To assist those currently running soup kitchens, growing spinach as a means of feeding those in the community and selling the surplus to raise funds is a popular idea. Community groups were identified and August saw two tunnels erected containing around 1,000 plants each. In only six weeks the first crops will be available to harvest and be of benefit to the community. With thanks to Chris Lovemore for his financial support in this project.

Masakhane Gym

Having grown from 20 to over 120 members in only 18 months, Masakhane continues to be an inspiration for young men and women within the community. Equipment is always a problem, so when 5 gym quality spinning bikes were donated we were all very excited. After small repairs completed by The Oliver Foundation, the bikes were presented to Masakhane and will be a popular choice for the young men having to lose weight for their body building competitions.

Zama Choir

Singing is a joy, and a choir of 35 children between the ages of 10 and 18 are now determined to be able to 'sing to the world'. They lighten any heart who has a moment to listen, and welcome the opportunity to perform at up coming events and conferences.
Zama Chess Club

Building on the success of the Zama Chess club, the Zama teacher has now opened classes at 3 major primary schools in the area. This will broaden the base of players who are participating and able to compete and will create an opportunity for meaningful township competitions to take place on a regular basis. It is by measuring yourself against others that you appreciate how much you have learned.
Zama Library

Access to books is so important for the development of young readers and it is not a priority in our local schools. A library has been a Zama priority for some time. A 12 metre long sea container has been secured and we now need to fill it with childrens books which will inspire these youngsters to begin to understand the wonderful adventures which can be had with a book!

Stunning Wimbledon Lunch

130 ladies from Surrey enjoyed a Wimbledon lunch on probably the hottest day of the year. Thank you to everyone who contributed towards making this such a fantastic event and opening your hearts to the Oliver Foundation.
